After every event, we go through all of your feedback, whether it's from the forums, our surveys or social media and look at what we can improve for the next event. We can't always fix everything, particularly where changes are expensive, but we do what we can.
Here are some of the things we've worked on ready for epic.ELEVEN next weekend:
- More Casual Gaming Activities - Reintroduced the epic.HUNT (run by the CantFitMyN team), added some extra big games and fun tournaments, including the return of L4D2 Survival.
- Internet Speeds - Firstly we now have a number of FTTC connections in at the event, which will give us a lot more bandwidth than the last event. We are also able to cache a large number of Steam games now, meaning that if somebody installs a new game or there is an update released during the event, only one person has to download it, then it is automatically cached locally for everybody else.
- Toilets - There was a lack of cold water for brushing teeth etc. and the delay on the light sensors was too short (we know you're all just tweeting in there), the venue have agreed to install a couple of cold water taps and increase the delay on the lights.
- Community Timetable - You asked for more ways to let participants know about activities you're running, like board games, werewolves etc. There is now a 'community timetable' available through the intranet that lets you submit your own items for everyone to see, as well as the usual forums, Teamspeak, IRC and of course, that talking to people thing!
- Bar Opening Hours - When you're playing games late into the night, you want the bar there for those late night beers. So the venue has agreed to keep the bar open until 2am.
- Later Breakfasts - If you've stayed up until 2am drinking at the bar, you're probably going to wake up late. That's cool though, the catering area will now be serving an all-day breakfast.
- Faster Check-In - The downstairs bar will once again open at 2pm, and (subject to our progress setting up), we hope to put a couple of staff members downstairs to start checking ID, issuing wristbands etc so that when we're ready to open at 4pm, we can let some of you straight past the queues. Don't forget to print off your booking barcodes and bring along some ID (to prove your age and that you're the ticket holder) though to help speed this up for us.
- Fruit??! - Not sure what this is, but the venue have said they'll find some for the catering area.
- Pub Quiz Limits - Some teams were perhaps taking advantage of our generosity with team limits last time, so we've put the fixed limit back in of 8 people. We'll make sure there are more tables out as well this time to people don't have to share.
- Announcements - There will be an internal announcements stream you can connect to either through a web player, or media player to you can hear announcements on your headsets to help if you aren't in one of the areas with a PA kit (e.g. Pendeen, Longstone etc). We've also replace one of the microphones used in Portland so hopefully the voice will be clearer over the music.
- Console Area In The Way - We'll be spinning this around 90degrees so it isn't getting in the way of the main entrance.
- Lights/Aircon - Cleared up confusion with the venue about us accessing the controls for lighting and aircon in each room so we should be able to react and change these settings easily.
- Tournament Delays - We will be taking a far more strict approach to teams delaying the start of their matches without good reason to keep the tournaments running on time.
This certainly isn't an exhaustive list and there's plenty more going on behind the scenes, but hopefully this gives you a taster of what we've been working on since the last LAN.
